Day 14 Meteor II

This legendary sailboat was launched in 1896. Designed by George L Watson. She carried over 12,000 square feet of sail and was 123 feet in length.

I paint these robust sailing vessels because they thrill me. I grew up sailing and experienced, at a young age, the sensation and excitement of the boat moving through the water, by the power of the wind. Imagining these big boats two and three times larger than any sailboat I’ve been on amazes me. They also had crews of 20 men continually trimming sails and holding on.
